5 Books to Watch for in November

5 Books to Watch for in November The season of Big Fall  Books is in full swing, and I had a heck of a time narrowing down this months highlights. Heres an eclectic mix that will, I hope, remind you of some  favorite writers with new projects and introduce you to new writers that will become  favorites. The Isle of Youth: Stories by Laura van den Berg (November 5, FSG)This ones at the top  because it is among my most-anticipated  books of the year, and Van den Berg is one of my  favorite short story writers. Her earlier collection What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us is simply stunning, and her chapbook There Will Be No More Good Nights Without Good Nights is a reminder of how powerful even the shortest stories can be. She can do in three pages what some writers spend entire novels trying (not always successfully) to do. Van den Berg creates worlds that are haunting and lovely and just a bit strange. She captures  characters in intimate, vulnerable moments and treats them with great sympathy and insight, and this remarkable collection is no exception. Highly recommended. Anything That Moves: Renegade Chefs, Fearless Eaters, and the Making of a New  American Food Culture by Dana Goodyear (November 4, Riverhead)Being a food lover hasnt always meant being willing to try anything, so how did we get here? In the spirit of Mary Roach and immersive journalism, Goodyear embeds herself with chefs, foodies, wholesalers, smugglers (like, of foie gras and caviar, not drugs), raw milk enthusiasts, and some of the worlds most daring eaters to trace a contemporary history of food culture. Go behind the scenes and off the menu in swanky kitchens, clandestine restaurants, food trucks, and subcultures you didnt even know existed in this fascinating and occasionally gross look at how and why we cook and eat the way we do today. No Good Duke Goes Unpunished: The Third Rule of Scoundrels by Sarah MacLean (November 26, Avon)This series! It is so much fun! Sarah MacLeans historical romances are rompy and delightful, filled with smart, self-possessed women, roguish men who Know Some Things, and love scenes that are as hot as they are well-written. The male leads in the Rule of Scoundrels series are co-owners of a gaming hell (read: gambling hall), and they have more than enough experience to show their innocent-but-ready-for-ruin ladies the finer points of the art of seduction. You can count on scandals and secret trysts a-plenty, and there might even be some legit bodice ripping. A great read for seasoned romance fans and newcomers alike. I started with Sarah MacLean, and I was hooked. This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett (November 5, Harper)Before Ann Patchett was a bestselling novelist and the patron saint of indie  bookstores, she wrote essays. Lots of them, for all kinds of publications. And then she found that she enjoyed writing nonfiction so much that she  kept writing even when she no longer had to. This collection brings together previously published pieces from throughout her career that speak to each other and highlight the recurring themes of Patchetts life as a writer. She writes about friendship, marriage (the one that failed, and the one that didnt), her beloved dog, caring for her grandmother, her unexpected turn as the owner of a bookstore,    and what happened when parents of Clemson University students tried have her and her book banned from campus. This collection is lovely and well-written, if a bit on the safe side for my taste. It will make an excellent gift or companion for a cozy weekend. Havisham: A Novel by Ronald Frame (November 5, Picador)A prequel to Great Expectations, all about how the most interesting character in the classic novel (Miss Havisham, natch) came to be that way. This is Miss Havisham falling in love, not Miss Havisham wandering her house in her decades-old wedding gown surrounded by moldy cake and cobwebs. Shifted-perspective takes on classics seem to be having a moment, and for this reader, who has always though Wide Sargasso Sea was infinitely more compelling than Jane Eyre, there couldnt be better news. Honorable Mention: This is Between Us by Kevin Sampsell (November 12, Tin House  Books)If this debut novel has half the heart of Sampsells wonderful memoir A Common Pornography, we are all in for a treat. Want Not by Jonathan Miles (November 5, HMH)The author of Dear American Airlines returns with a bigger, bolder, even darker and funnier sophomore effort. Bellman Black by Diane Setterfield (November 5, Atria/Amy Bestler Books)The long (long long long) awaited new novel from the author of The Thirteenth Tale. All Hail the Divine Ruler, Queen of Kish

Want to know which monarch of ancient Sumer reigned supreme at any given time? You’d have to check out the aptly named Sumerian King List. But the Sumerians had a super-special idea of â€Å"kingship†: it was a force that liked to travel. For generations at a time, nam-lugal, or â€Å"kingship,† was bestowed upon a particular city, represented by a monarch who ruled for a long time. Only one city was believed to hold true kingship at any given time. After a few hundred years, kingship went from one city to another, which then held the honor of nam-lugal for a few generations. Apparently, the gods, who bestowed rulership as a privilege, not a right, upon humans, got fed up of one place after a period of time, so they regifted it elsewhere. In reality, the list may have reflected a particular city’s rise to power or military defeat in Sumer: if City A came to prominence, then its hegemony could be justified by claiming divine right. This mythological idea wasnt realistic - many cities had individual kings reigning at the same time – but since when did myth have reflect reality? Its Ladies Night Tons of monarchs make an appearance on the Sumerian King List, but there’s only one lady named: Kubaba, or Kug-Bau.  Not to be confused with the monster Huwawa or Hubaba in the Epic of Gilgamesh, Kubaba was a woman alone – the only queen regnant who’s recorded as bearing divine rulership. The Sumerian King List records that the city of Kish held nam-lugal multiple times. In fact, it was the first city to hold kingship after a great mythical flood – sound familiar? After sovereignty bounced around to a lot of different places, it landed in Kish a few more times – although that’s since been cast in doubt. On one of those occasions, a woman named Kug-Bau ruled the city. Drink Up!   Kubaba is first identified in the King List as the â€Å"the woman tavern-keeper.† How could she have gone from owning a bar/inn to ruling a city? We can’t be sure, but female tavern-keepers actually held important positions in Sumerian mythology and daily life. Perhaps that’s because of the mega-importance of beer in Sumerian culture. While some scholars theorized that taverns equaled brothels in Sumer, apparently â€Å"tavern keeping was a common and respectable female occupation until later periods in Mesopotamia,† according to Julia Assante. Regardless of what kind of show they were running, women often ran taverns, holding perhaps one of the only independent female positions of power in ancient Sumer. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, an important character is Siduri the tavern-keeper, who runs an inn in the Underworld. She must be an immortal of some sort to live where she does, and gives Gilgamesh sage advice like â€Å"Who of the mortal can live forever? The life of man is short†¦.let there be pleasure and dancing.† So, in what was probably a very important epic even in antiquity, a female tavern-keeper was seen as a guide  along perilous paths  and a figure worthy of veneration. Real-life politics may or may not have allowed a tavern-keeper co to rule over her city. But what was the purpose in identifying her profession? By associating her with the mythical Siduri and a prominent feminine profession – whether she ran a brothel or not - the recorder of the King List literally immortalized Kubaba and made her the one of world’s most independent women before Beyoncà ©. According to Carol R. Fontaine in her essay â€Å"Visual Metaphors and Proverbs 15:15-20,† there was a sacredness attached to female tavern-keepers. She wrote that, â€Å"given the association of Inanna-Ishtar with the tavern and the sweet (sexual?) wine to be drunk there, as well as female ownership of taverns and involvement with the process of brewery, we should not assume Ku-Baba to be some sort of prostitute but a successful business woman with divine associations herself.† So what else did Kubaba do? The King List says she â€Å"made firm the foundations of Kish,† indicating she fortified it against invaders. Lots of monarchs did this; Gilgamesh even built a lot of walls to protect his city of Uruk . So it sounds like Kubaba carried on a grand royal tradition of building up her city. According to the King List, Kubaba ruled for one hundred years. That’s obviously exaggerated, but a lot of other monarchs on the list have similarly long reigns. But it didn’t last forever. Eventually, â€Å"Kish was defeated† – or destroyed, depending on the version you’re reading – and the gods decided to remove kingship from this city. It went to the city of Akshak instead. A Womans Work Never Ends But Kubaba’s legacy didn’t end there. It seems that later generations weren’t crazy about women occupying traditional men’s roles. A later omen reading indicated that, if an individual is born intersex, it’s the â€Å"omen of Ku-Bau who ruled the land; the land of the king will become waste.†Ã‚  By taking on the duties of a man – a king – Kubaba was seen to have crossed a boundary and transcended gender divisions in an improper fashion. Combining male and female genitalia in an individual would echo her reign as lugal, or king, which the ancients saw as violating the natural order of things. The omen texts indicate that both an individual with the sexual organs of two genders and a queen regnant were seen as unnatural. â€Å"These were linked in the elite mind as a challenge and threat to the political hegemony of the king,† said Fontaine. Similarly, in another omen reading, if a patient’s lung didn’t look so good, it was the sign of Kubaba, â€Å"who seized the kingship.†Ã‚  So, basically, Kubaba’s legacy served as a means of identifying bad stuff that went against the way things should be. Its also worth noting that Kubaba is portrayed as an improper usurper here. Kubaba’s legacy might not have been limited to her reputation. In fact, she mightve founded a real dynasty! After her reign, kingship transferred to Akshak; a few generations later, a king named Puzur-Nirah ruled there. Apparently, Kubaba was still alive at this time, according to the Weidner Chronicle, and Kubaba, a.k.a. â€Å"the alewife,† fed some local fishermen who lived near her house. Because she was so nice, the god Marduk liked her and gave â€Å"royal dominion of all lands entirely over to Ku-Baba.† On the King List, royal power is said to have gone back to Kish after Akshak†¦and guess who ruled? â€Å"Puzur-Suen, the son of Kug-Bau, became king; he ruled for 25 years.† So it looks like the story about Marduk giving kingship back to Kubaba’s family demonstrates her real-life family taking power eventually. Puzur-Suen’s son, Ur-Zubaba, ruled after him. According to the list, â€Å"131 are the years of the dynasty of Kug-Bau,† but that doesn’t add up when you tally the years of each reign. Oh, well! Eventually, the name â€Å"Kubaba† became best-known as that of a Neo-Hittite goddess, hailing from the city of Carchemish. This Kubaba probably didn’t have any relation to our Kug-Bau from Sumer, but an incarnation of the deity so prominent in Asia Minor might’ve become the goddess the Romans knew as  Cybele (nà ©e Cybebe). If so, then the name Kubaba had come a long way from Kish!

Arch of Constantine Constantine’s the Great was one of the strongest and most important rulers in late Roman Empire and the founder of the Byzantine Empire. His legacy is known for his bold changes and accomplishments in uniting the empire making it become more powerful once again and his outlawing of paganism, and curbing Christians from persecutions. The Arch of Constantine was erected between 312 and 315 AD., in Rome adjacent to the Coliseum to commemorate Constantine’s triumph over Maxentius in a victory that united the empire and insured its transition into the Eastern Roman Empire known as the Byzantine Empire, with its capital Constantinople in what is known today as Istanbul. The arch is known as the largest and last surviving Roman Empire since the end of the Severan dynasty in the late 3rd century. It consists of three arches, made from rectangular blocks of Proconnesian marble with a height of 69 Ft and 85 ft wide, with one large central arch and two smaller arches on its side. Four Corinthian columns stand at each of its faà §ades. With the inscription on top of the arch and both sides, Constantine was reminding the Roman people of a different war, a civil war, unlike Titus’ suppressing of the Jewish Revolt or Severus’ victory over the Germans. What is missing from these discussions, however, is  why  computers have the impact they do on society. What are the characteristics that are the root of this impact? Are there fundamental differences between this technology and others that have transformed our world in the past? The intent of developing a list of these characteristics is that it could lead to a better understanding of the nature of the social impact of computers. In this way, it might be possible to examine a new computer project at the time of its  design  (not, as is the usual case, a long time after the project has been implemented and disseminated) to determine its potential impacts as a social change agent. The characteristics given below are not necessarily unique to computer technology. However, in many instances computers have created situations that were previously impossible to accomplish (such as space flight), were essentially inconceivable until the technology was applied, or at least were very difficult to achieve without the aid of computer technology. Furthermore, even though other technologies may have had impacts similar to computers in many ways, computer technology has greatly amplified their effects to the point of entirely overshadowing any previous technologys impact. First, the explosion of the availability of information is due in large part to the computers ability to generate, collect, and store an ever increasing amount of raw data. Since the ability to create and collect data is growing exponentially, so too is the generation of information that can be synthesized from this data. Second, the types of negative impacts a single error can have has grown enormously with computer technology. Finally, the number of people directly affected by a system error has also grown enormously, to where a single software system literally can affect millions directly. 3) Accessibility Access to information continues to increase at hard to believe speeds. Many information resources are available only in digital form, via, for instance, the Internet. As more information is converted to digital form (e. g. voice and video), the ability to duplicate and distribute such information increases enormously. Indeed, there are some forms of publishing that can exist only within the context of a computer system. The concept of hypertext and hypermedia (including audio and video), the ability to create non-linear accessibility to information, was conceived out of the ability to randomly access information via computers. Its increasing success easily shows how important information in a digital form has become already. (Oz, 1994). (5) Lack of Accountability It has become a popular complaint that it is getting more and more difficult to locate a human being who is willing to accept responsibility for an error made by a computerized system. While it is tempting to blame such problems on incompetent employees, in truth the problem may be a poor user interface, lack of training, or an error in the software, none of which can be solved by those providing the front-line service. Another difficulty is finding someone who will, indeed, fix an error in an account. It is often the case that service representatives are reluctant to accept the responsibility for making a necessary change. In addition, it can often be difficult to even find a human being to deal with a problem. Getting lost in a voice-mail system has become a modern urban legend. (Nissenbaum, 1994). (6) Temporality Computers have several effects on time and the timeliness of information. It seems that computer technology is to blame in large part for the speed p of modern society everything has to get done faster, be there sooner, be available immediately. Another form of temporality in computer systems is that information can be retained over long periods of time, even when they appear to have been destroyed (consider the classic case of Col. Oliver North). There is little reason that information should be entirely lost any more, even due to accident. And it is reasonable to suspect that every s crap of information generated today will be available virtually forever. Another temporal shift for which computers have been responsible is that people who work together do not necessarily have to do so at the same time. Finally, services and information are more frequently available on a 24-hour basis. This allows people to request a service or seek information when it fits their schedule, rather than when it fits the service providers schedule. (7) Spatiality Computers have done more to shorten distances than any previous technology, even the supersonic jet. It is possible to send large amounts of data, messages, video, etc. virtually anywhere in the world via networks such as Internet. Long distance learning, using information databases or video feeds of courses via satellite, is a reality for a growing portion of our modern society. We can now even be on the move when we talk with someone on the phone, or receive a fax. (8) Surveillability Is there any doubt that computers have made surveillance easier than at any time in history? In addition to the usual surveillance equipment such as cameras and microphones, transactional data is increasingly being collected for virtually all types of transactions, even cash purchases and the acquisition of services. There has even been discussion by the government of using a universal health card, which is seen by many as the first step toward finalizing the move (begun with the co-opting of the social security number) in the US toward a national identification card. (9) Shifting of Relationships/Changes in Intercommunication Protocols One of the more difficult characteristics to track is how computer technology has changed communication between people and groups of people. In particular, the use of email has been shown to eliminate a lot of the usual visual and verbal cues we often use in communicating with one another (whch can be viewed as both an advantage and as a disadvantage). In addition to removing such cues, computer-mediated communications mask attributes such as race, gender, age, or physical disability, in addition, perhaps, to the persons social or management status within an organization. (Grudin, 1994; Perrole, 1987). (10) Illusion of Precision It is not difficult to make many (perhaps even most) people who are not in the computer field believe that any numeric result generated by a computer is correct. Those not well versed in the hardware of computers have little understanding of the fact that numbers must be converted back and forth between decimal and binary forms, or that there is a limitation on the accuracy of numbers due to memory constraints. As a result, they willingly accept values generated by a computer as infinitely accurate. (Liffick, 1985). Conclusion The characteristics described above are factors in the social impact of computer technology. For most there is at least anecdotal evidence of their existence (with seemingly countless examples). For some, there is also experimental evidence. It has finally become widely accepted that technology is not value neutral, as originally thought. By examining this list and using it as a set of landmarks for evaluating new systems, it may be possible to better anticipate the social impact of new systems, prior to their dissemination.

You can earn a maximum of 100 points on the multiple-choice section. Free-response questions are reviewed by AP graders. You’ll get a score out of 7 or 8 for each of the two questions. Each of these scores is then multiplied by 3.125 so that together they make up one-third of your total raw score. Your raw score is then compared with the curve calculated by the College Board to see what score you’ll get on the final 1-5 AP scale. The following table offers estimated raw-to-AP-score conversions for the AP Psychology test. Keep in mind that each year the curve is slightly different, so this will lead to a rough estimate of your score, not an exact prediction. This would add up to a raw score of 83 because 55 + (4*3.125) + (5*3.125)= 83.125. Based on the chart above, this score would then translate to a 3 for a final AP score. Topics and Example Questions on the AP Psychology Test In this section, I’ll give you some real-life examples of test questions so you can get a better idea of what the AP Psychology test is actually like. As a preface to the questions, here are the topics you’ll see on AP Psych, ordered from most to least common. You should consult this list to make sure that you've fully reviewed the content for the test and aren't missing anything important (especially in the most common topic areas). A. Sally thinks everyone’s favorite color is blue because it is her favorite color.B. Tom received the highest grade in his philosophy course.C. Gracie forgets about her toy because it is under her blanket.D. Nikos can consider both the height and width of a container.E. Ava does not like being around unfamiliar people. To answer this question, you need to be familiar with Piaget’s psychological theory and the behaviors that correspond with each of his proposed stages. Piaget’s theory of development has four stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operations. The concrete operational stage typically happens between the ages of 7 and 11. This stage is when a child becomes capable of applying logical and operational thought to physical objects but isn’t quite capable of abstract logic yet. Let’s go through the possibilities! Choice A doesn’t have anything to do with the concrete operational stage, so we can eliminate that answer. Choice B seems as though it’s beyond the concrete operational stage. Philosophy involves a lot of abstract reasoning! This choice can be eliminated as well. The child in Choice C is too underdeveloped. Kids in the concrete operational stage have spatial awareness, so we can get rid of this one. Choice D seems to make sense! This is the stage at which kids start to understand logically that a tall, skinny glass might hold the same amount of water as a short, wide glass. Choice E appears to be unrelated to the concrete operational stage, so we can eliminate it. Therefore, we can conclude that Choice D is the correct answer. "I ga ga, therefore I goo goo." Tom, please stop. Free The following free-response question was on the 2012 AP Psychology exam: 1a. Annabelle is planning to apply to college but has not yet decided where she will apply. Describe how the following psychological concepts and terms relate to her choice. Availability heuristic Compliance Prefrontal cortex Prospective memory 1b. Explain how the following psychological concepts could relate to how well Annabelle adapts when she begins her college career. Agoraphobia Crystallized intelligence Ethnocentrism For this free-response question, you must understand what each of the terms mean and how they relate to this specific situation. To earn your first point on part a, you have to explain how the availability heuristic might have affected Annabelle’s college decision. The scoring guidelines state, "Students must establish that Annabelle’s decision-making processes or her choices about college, or both, are influenced by information that comes most readily to mind." For example, you might say that Annabelle decided to apply to UCLA because her parents had gone there and talk to her about it frequently, so this option was at the forefront of her mind in the decision-making process. You would then go on to relate the three remaining terms to Annabelle's college-search process. You could earn a maximum of four points in part a of this question (one point for each description). Part b asks you to explain how certain psychological concepts might relate to Annabelle's adaptation to her new college environment. For agoraphobia, the scoring guidelines say, "Students must explain how Annabelle’s fear inhibits her from engaging in college life." This could be something like describing how Annabelle’s fear of crowds caused her to skip orientation activities and miss out on the chance to make new friends. You'd need to do the same for the other two terms to earn the full three points for part b. "Does free will exist, or am I just a made-up person who exists solely to provide context for a question on an exam taken by beings in an alternate universe?" Oh, Annabelle, save it for college. What’s the Best Way to Prep for the AP Psychology Exam? If you’re aware of the structure and content of the AP Psychology exam, you can use specific prep methods to help you succeed on it. Here are five tips guaranteed to give you a higher chance of earning a great AP Psych score. #1: Take Practice Tests The best way to prepare for standardized tests like this one is to take practice tests so that you have a good idea of where your weaknesses lie. Practice tests will also help you get used to the format of the AP Psych test, as well as the types of questions it asks. The College Board offers practice free-response questions from previous years (up to 2017). You can also access three full-length official AP Psychology practice tests as free PDFS: 2012 AP Psychology Exam 1999 AP Psychology Exam 1994 AP Psychology Exam To simulate the real testing experience, I recommend printing out the test and writing/bubbling in your answers to the questions rather than doing them on the computer. You should also time yourself accurately so you can be sure you don't run out of time on the actual exam. After you take a practice test or two, review your answers to see which content areas gave you the most trouble. Focus on going over the topics for which you had the highest concentration of incorrect answers. #2: Use the Topic Breakdown Information For AP Psychology, we know exactly which topics will be covered and how frequently we can expect to see them on the test. This is valuable information you can use to your advantage when studying. Specifically, spend more time reviewing unfamiliar topics that are especially common on the exam. It's better to know the ins and outs of a high-frequency topic super well than to have only a rudimentary knowledge of two low-frequency topics. Prioritize wisely! A topic breakdown sounds almost like a topic breakdance! Am I relating to the youth yet? #3: Learn to Budget Your Time Appropriately This is something you can do in conjunction with taking practice tests. On the AP Psychology test, you only have about 40 seconds for each multiple-choice question. This means you have to be smart about skipping questions that are taking up too much of your time. If you take a practice test and find that you’re often running out of time, you might need to push yourself to work faster or move on from difficult questions more quickly. You’ll also have just 25 minutes for each free-response question on the test. The good news is that free-response questions on AP Psychology are scored based on the information you provide and not on your mastery of essay format. In short, you don’t have to write an introduction and a conclusion, which will save you a lot of time. #4: Go Over Important Terms On the AP Psych exam, it’s crucial for you to know the meanings of key terms related to the course. Questions often ask you to explain how a scenario relates to a certain psychological concept. But if you don’t remember what the concept means, you won’t be able to answer the question. There are lots of confusing terms in AP Psychology, which is why it’s so important that you take the time to compile them and go through them methodically when you study. This is especially true of terms you learned at the beginning of the school year, as they'll be less fresh in your mind when the time comes to take the test. #5: Avoid Cramming There’s a lot to remember for AP Psychology, and you aren’t going to be able to stuff it all in your brain in one night. For courses like this that are memorization-heavy, it’s best to get in the habit of studying as you go along and taking the time to review old material periodically. If you can gradually build up your knowledge throughout the school year and avoid completely forgetting what you learned at the beginning of class, the exam will feel much less stressful for you. Every one or two months, do a comprehensive review of everything you’ve learned so far to refresh your memory. You might be surprised by how little you have to study for the AP Psych test at the end of the school year when everyone else is freaking out! And remember, ladies, you're never too busy to throw on a little eye glitter between study sessions.
